Journal Prompts for the Loss of a Pet
🌙 Reflective 💠Thoughtful 😌 Calm
Losing a pet leaves a particular kind of silence, the absence of paws on the floor, a warm body no longer curled beside you at night. The world may not always understand the depth of this grief, but you do. These prompts honour the love you shared with your animal companion and give your sorrow the space it deserves. Writing an unsent letter can be a tender way to say what remains unsaid, and our guide on how to journal for grief may offer further comfort.
- 1 Write about your pet as though introducing them to someone who never had the chance to meet them.
- 2 What do you miss most tonight: a sound, a habit, a feeling of their presence?
- 3 Describe a memory that captures exactly who they were.
- 4 How did your pet change your daily life? What routines revolved around them?
- 5 Write about the way they greeted you, comforted you, or simply existed beside you.
- 6 What did your pet teach you about love, patience, or being present?
- 7 How are you navigating the empty spaces they left: the bed, the bowl, the quiet evening?
- 8 Write about the decision to say goodbye, if that was part of your experience. What did it cost you?
- 9 Has anyone dismissed your grief? How did that feel, and what do you want to say in response?
- 10 Describe the last good day you had together. What do you remember?
- 11 What would you want your pet to know, if they could understand your words tonight?
- 12 Write about a funny or strange habit they had: something that was entirely, wonderfully theirs.
- 13 How has your home changed since they left? What feels most different?
- 14 What does this loss teach you about the kind of love that does not require language?
- 15 Write about the guilt, if there is any. Put it on the page and look at it honestly.
- 16 How do you want to remember them: what image, what feeling, what moment?
- 17 What has surprised you about the intensity of this grief?
- 18 Do you imagine welcoming another animal into your life one day, or does that thought feel impossible right now?
- 19 As the night settles around you, write a goodbye, or a goodnight, to your companion.
