Journal Prompts for Shadow Work

🌙 Reflective 💭 Thoughtful

The shadow is everything you have tucked away: the traits you deny, the feelings you suppress, the parts of yourself you learned were not welcome. Night is a natural time to meet these hidden selves, when defences soften and honesty comes more easily. These prompts are an invitation to look, not to fix, and pair well with a shadow journaling practice or deeper self-discovery work.

  1. 1 What quality in others irritates you most? Could it be something you have not accepted in yourself?
  2. 2 Write about a part of your personality you were taught to hide as a child.
  3. 3 When did you last feel ashamed? What was underneath the shame?
  4. 4 What would you never want anyone to know about you? Write it here, just for yourself.
  5. 5 Describe a time you acted in a way that surprised or disturbed you. What drove that behaviour?
  6. 6 What emotions do you consider unacceptable? Where did you learn that rule?
  7. 7 Write about a fear you have never spoken aloud.
  8. 8 Who do you judge most harshly, and what does that judgement reveal about your own inner world?
  9. 9 What patterns do you keep repeating even though you know they do not serve you?
  10. 10 Write a letter from the part of yourself you like least. What does it need you to hear?
  11. 11 When you are alone at night, what thoughts surface that you push away during the day?
  12. 12 What role do you play in your relationships that does not feel authentic?
  13. 13 Describe a memory you feel guilty about. Can you hold it with compassion rather than condemnation?
  14. 14 What are you most afraid of becoming? Why does that fear hold such power?
  15. 15 Write about the difference between who you present to the world and who you are in private.
  16. 16 What would it mean to stop performing goodness and simply be honest?
  17. 17 When did you first learn to suppress anger, sadness, or desire? What happened?
  18. 18 What do you gain by keeping parts of yourself hidden? What does it cost?
  19. 19 Write about a quality you admire in others but do not allow yourself to claim.
  20. 20 Tonight, as the day's masks come off, who are you really?
