Journal Prompts for Shadow Work
🌙 Reflective 💠Thoughtful
The shadow is everything you have tucked away: the traits you deny, the feelings you suppress, the parts of yourself you learned were not welcome. Night is a natural time to meet these hidden selves, when defences soften and honesty comes more easily. These prompts are an invitation to look, not to fix, and pair well with a shadow journaling practice or deeper self-discovery work.
- 1 What quality in others irritates you most? Could it be something you have not accepted in yourself?
- 2 Write about a part of your personality you were taught to hide as a child.
- 3 When did you last feel ashamed? What was underneath the shame?
- 4 What would you never want anyone to know about you? Write it here, just for yourself.
- 5 Describe a time you acted in a way that surprised or disturbed you. What drove that behaviour?
- 6 What emotions do you consider unacceptable? Where did you learn that rule?
- 7 Write about a fear you have never spoken aloud.
- 8 Who do you judge most harshly, and what does that judgement reveal about your own inner world?
- 9 What patterns do you keep repeating even though you know they do not serve you?
- 10 Write a letter from the part of yourself you like least. What does it need you to hear?
- 11 When you are alone at night, what thoughts surface that you push away during the day?
- 12 What role do you play in your relationships that does not feel authentic?
- 13 Describe a memory you feel guilty about. Can you hold it with compassion rather than condemnation?
- 14 What are you most afraid of becoming? Why does that fear hold such power?
- 15 Write about the difference between who you present to the world and who you are in private.
- 16 What would it mean to stop performing goodness and simply be honest?
- 17 When did you first learn to suppress anger, sadness, or desire? What happened?
- 18 What do you gain by keeping parts of yourself hidden? What does it cost?
- 19 Write about a quality you admire in others but do not allow yourself to claim.
- 20 Tonight, as the day's masks come off, who are you really?
